The N-1 deck jacket was used as a set with trousers made of the same material for U.S. Navy ship crews from World War II to the Korean War.  Like other deck jackets, the outer material is made of cotton grosgrain, commonly known as "jungle cloth," and the lining is made of alpaca mohair wool pile, which has excellent wind protection and heat retention.

The navy blue model of the N-1 was adopted in 1944, and the khaki model was issued the following year in 1945.  The changes include not only the color, but also the omission of the alpaca mohair sewn on the inside of the cuffs, the simplification of the loops attached to the underarm lining and hem cord, the enlargement of the hem cord eyelet, and the position of the eyelet under the armpit.
